Grandmaster's Gambit
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
A desktop chess game that feels like handling real pieces on a real board, plays a fair game at your level, and asks nothing of you.
You launch it, you play a game, you close it.
Complete chess, verified
Every piece and every rule: castling, en passant, promotion, the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition, stalemate, insufficient material. The move generator is checked against the published perft tables at every depth, so a legal position is a legal position and a draw is a draw.
An opponent at your level
Four difficulty tiers, measured rather than claimed. The weaker ones make human-shaped mistakes instead of playing strongly and badly on purpose. The top tier scored around 1800 in measured matches against strength-limited Stockfish anchors — strong enough to be a real game, not so strong that playing it is pointless.
It never makes you wait
The opponent thinks on its own turn and never on yours. Pick up a piece and its legal squares are already lit. No frame of the game blocks on anything.
Two humans, one board
Pass-and-play on a single device: both sides from the board, no tier and no opponent involved.
Take it back, ask for a hint
Both unlimited, and nothing counts how often you use them. A takeback gives you back the time, not a different opponent — the position you return to gets the same reply it gave before. A hint comes from the same opponent you are playing, so it is never stronger than the level you chose.
The board
Staunton pieces in polished marble on a mahogany-and-maple board, lit with real shadows. Turn the board a quarter at a time, or look straight down for a clean overhead view.
Quiet by design
No account. No network code at all. No telemetry, no ads, no in-app purchases, no dailies, no streaks, no notifications, no rating that punishes you for stopping. It runs on a machine that has never seen the internet, forever, exactly as well as on the day you installed it.
